Adams County sheriff’s deputy Joshua Maloy was killed in the Dec. 24 crash.

WELD COUNTY, Colo. — A woman is facing charges in connection with a crash that killed an off-duty deputy last year in Weld County, prosecutors said.

31-year-old Joshua Maloy, an Adams County sheriff’s deputy, was killed in the crash the evening of Dec. 24 on Weld County Road 49 south of Weld County Road 40, about 11 miles east of Gilcrest. The Colorado State Patrol said at the time that a driver crossed the centerline and hit Maloy’s vehicle head-on.

Monday, the Weld County District Attorney’s Office announced that charges were filed last week in connection with the crash. Kayla Carroll, 37, is charged with:

  • Vehicular homicide
  • Two counts of vehicular assault
  • Driving under restraint
  • Displaying fictitious or altered license plates

Prosecutors said a summons has been issued for Carroll to appear in court. An advisement hearing is scheduled for Dec. 12.

Maloy, who was off duty when the crash happened, had been with the Adams County Sheriff’s Office for two years and nine months. He was a husband and father, and he previously served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
