The city is on pace to record fewer auto thefts this year than last year.

DENVER — There have been 11,305 auto thefts reported in Denver this year. One of those stolen cars belongs to Mayor Mike Johnston, the mayor’s office said Tuesday.

Johnston’s car was stolen in Denver last month, a spokesperson said. Records retrieved by 9NEWS show a car was stolen from outside the mayor’s home in Central Park, but the mayor’s spokesperson says it has since been recovered.

Johnston also had a vehicle stolen in Denver in 2017, according to a social media post from Jan. 1 of that year.

In 2022, Denver recorded 15,207 auto thefts, according to the city’s crime dashboard. That means the city is on pace to record fewer auto thefts this year than last year.

In March, the Denver Police Department created a Denver-specific auto theft team. That team made 104 arrests in its first three months.

From June: Dedicated DPD auto theft unit makes 104 arrests in three months

So far this year, around 950 cars have been stolen from the Denver International Airport. But police said the numbers there appear to be trending down.

In July, a new law went into effect that makes stealing any vehicle, regardless of its value, a felony in Colorado.
