A spokeswoman for the park said the man, who is a suspect in a separate burglary, drove recklessly along the entire 48-mile stretch of Trail Ridge Road.
ESTES PARK, Colo. — A man who was speeding through Rocky Mountain National Park and hit another car at the visitor’s center, leaving three people injured, is on the run, according to a spokeswoman for the park.
Late Sunday, park Law Enforcement rangers tried to pull the man over after they were notified that he sped through the Grand Lake entrance on the west side of the park.
According to a release, the man failed to stop and drove recklessly on US 34 (Trail Ridge Road) by speeding and passing vehicles along the entire 48-mile stretch of the mountain highway through the park.
Due to the driver’s excessive speed and recklessness, law enforcement rangers backed off on the pursuit.
They attempted to slow his vehicle at Deer Ridge Junction and placed stop sticks near the Beaver Meadows Entrance on the east side. The driver continued speeding south past the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center and hit another vehicle with three people inside.
All of them were transported by ambulance to Estes Park Health. One of them was critically injured, according to the spokeswoman.
After the crash, the man ran from his vehicle toward homes along High Drive in Estes Park. That prompted a shelter-in-place order that has since been lifted even though the man has not been located.
The man has not been named, but it’s believed he’s also wanted for a burglary in Grand County.
He’s described as a bald white man who is 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs 165 pounds. He was wearing blue jeans and no shirt or shoes when he was last seen.
He may have a head injury due to the crash, according to the spokeswoman. If you see him or know where he is you’re asked to call 911.
