The bear was spotted south of Park Meadows Drive but has since moved into an open space area.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. — A bear was spotted near an elementary school in Douglas County on Monday, prompting the school to be placed on a secure perimeter status for a short time.

The sheriff’s office said the bear was seen near Acres Green Drive and Maximus Drive which is near two parks, Acres Green Park and Lonesome Pine Park. It’s also near Acres Green Elementary School in the area just south of Park Meadow Drive.

A spokeswoman for the Douglas County School District said the school was placed under a secure perimeter status for a short time but that was lifted shortly after 9 a.m.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said deputies initially received reports about the bear around 8:15 a.m. and that they were monitoring it. A deputy said it was moving to C-470 and away from the immediate vicinity of the school.

A spokeswoman for Colorado Parks and Wildlife also indicated the bear had moved into a nearby open space.
