LOVELAND, Colo — The Alexander Mountain Fire burn scar in Larimer County is under a flash flood warning as heavy rain falls over the area.
The flash flood warning is in effect until 5:45 p.m. Monday. The National Weather Service said radar-indicated thunderstorms were producing heavy rain over the burn scar, including 0.2 to 0.3 inches of rain in one 15-minute period.
A flash flood warning is also in effect for the Cameron Peak Fire burn scar, which borders the north edge of the the Alexander Mountain Fire burn scar. That warning is in effect until 5 p.m. The NWS said between 0.4 and 0.6 inches of rain fell on that burn scar in a 20-minute period.
The Cameron Peak Fire, the largest wildfire in Colorado history, burned 208,913 acres in Larimer County in 2020.
The Alexander Mountain Fire, which started July 29, burned 9,668 acres in the mountains west of Loveland. A total of 51 structures, including 30 homes, were destroyed or damaged in the fire. Containment was at 91% as of Saturday night.
Volunteers are offering sandbags to people living in the Alexander Mountain Fire area to help protect against flash flooding. Volunteers are planning to assemble about 4,000 to 5,000 sandbags over the next few weeks, and pass them out as needed through the spring. People can pick them up at the Rez Church in Loveland from 10 a.m. – noon on Aug. 17 and Aug. 25.
