A local prosecutor told the Associated Press that the suspected gunman was dead after an apparent assassination attempt on Donald Trump.

WASHINGTON — Law enforcement officials say Saturday’s shooting at Donald Trump’s campaign rally is being investigated as an attempted assassination of the ex-president and the suspect is dead.

Here’s what we know about what happened.

Who was the shooter?

As of 8 p.m. Eastern, authorities have yet to release the identity of the suspected gunman in the shooting at Trump’s rally.

Butler County district attorney Richard Goldinger told the Associated Press in a phone interview that the suspect was dead and at least one rally attendee was killed.

Law enforcement sources told AP the gunman was located outside of the rally and was killed by the U.S. Secret Service.

What happened to Donald Trump?

After apparent gunshots rang through the crowd, Trump could be seen reaching with his right hand up to his ear.

Trump appeared to lower himself behind the lectern and the sounds — apparent gunshots — continued as Secret Service agents rushed the stage.

Agents eventually stood up, surrounding Trump.

As they moved with him off the stage, Trump lifted his right arm and fist into the air. Blood was seen on the right side of his face.

Trump’s campaign quickly issued a statement saying the former president is “fine” and was being checked out at a local medical facility.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
