The nationwide canned coffee recall includes nearly 300 separate products sold under a variety of roaster and brand names.
WASHINGTON — A company responsible for manufacturing hundreds of canned coffee drinks is recalling all of their products because the current manufacturing process could lead to a potentially deadly toxin growing in the cans.
Snapchill LLC issued the voluntary recall on June 17 for all canned coffee products manufactured by the Wisconsin-based company. In the recall notice, posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the company said their manufacturing process could lead to “the growth and production of the deadly toxin, botulinum toxin, in low acid canned foods.”
Botulinum toxin is the cause behind botulism, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning.
Symptoms include general weakness of the body and muscles, dizziness, double vision, trouble speaking or swallowing, difficulty breathing and constipation. Anybody experiencing these symptoms within two weeks of consuming a canned coffee beverage produced by Snapchill is being encouraged to seek emergency medical help.
The canned coffee products were distributed nationwide to various coffee roasters and retail stores, and were sold directly from Snapchill online.
The recall is widespread and affects nearly 300 separate products sold under a variety of roaster and brand names. The metal cans range from 7 to 12 oz. All of the affected products have the phrase “Produced and distributed by Snapchill LLC” under the nutrition facts panel, and some have “Snapchill Coffee” on the label. The full list of affected products can be found here.
The problem was discovered when the FDA notified Snapchill that the federally required paperwork describing their low acid canned food manufacturing process was not on file.
Despite the danger of botulism, no illnesses have been reported and Snapchill said they were not aware of any confirmed cases of botulinum toxin being found in any of their drinks.
Anybody who has bought cans of Snapchill coffee should either destroy them, or return them to the store it was bought from for a refund. Snapchill will also provide a refund for any affected products with proof of purchase and an image of the products being destroyed. Information about Snapchill’s refund policy can be found by emailing here.
Customers can also call 920-632-6018 on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Central Time for information.
